The liver is one of the most vital organs found in the human body. The primary function of the liver is to filter blood originating in the digestive track before it goes to the rest of the body while also detoxifying the body from dangerous chemicals and metabolizing drugs. With the various functions the liver has, many are beginning to utilize supplements like TUDCA to help support this important organ.

What is TUDCA?

TUDCA, or Tauroursodeoxycholic Acid, was originally found in Traditional Chinese medicine over past centuries. However, recent scientific research has shown a wide range of uses for this popular supplement. TUDCA is an endogenous, hydrophilic bile acid derivative most often taken to help promote healthy liver function and vision maintenance.

TUDCA Benefits

Over time, many different benefits have been achieved through the supplementation of TUDCA. In fact, the metabolite is often prescribed for individuals undergoing treatment for cholestasis, or the stoppage of bile. Cholestasis can often occur when toxic steroid metabolites accumulate in the liver.

Oral steroids can also have a direct impact on cholesterol levels within the body that can lead to the development of heart disease over time. When the body enters cholestasis, cholesterol metabolism will often also be altered. Supplementing with TUDCA may help reduce this risk of both of these problems.

TUDCA benefits don’t end with liver support. In a recent study, researchers found that TUDCA may be effective in maintaining the cones and rods within the eye to help promote healthy vision. These photoreceptors within the retina of the eye are responsible for optimal eyesight, including color and detail perception.

TUDCA Dosage

For supplementation purposes, the standard TUDCA dosage can range anywhere between 250mg and 300mg once or twice daily. However, for individuals with liver damage, a medical physician may increase that dosage. Some brands, like Premium Powders TUDCA, provide a single serving in an easy to swallow veggie capsule for easier supplementation.

TUDCA Side Effects

The body naturally produces TUDCA as an endogenous bile acid during healthy liver function. For this reason, there are no known side effects that have been found while supplementing TUDCA. However, if side effects are experienced, use should be discontinued immediately and you should consult your physician.
