Acetyl L-Tyrosine is one of the most common forms of the amino acid, Tyrosine. Its chemical formula is synthetically altered with acetic acid to increase this amino acid’s bioavailability which means that it is more easily absorbed and recognized by the body.

Tyrosine, being a non-essential amino acid is already produced within the body from other amino acids when required but there are benefits to supplementing with additional Tyrosine.

Effective Against Phenylketonuria (PKU)

PKU is a medical condition, in which the body becomes unable to process the amino acid, Phenylalanine. This amino acid has many important functions within the brain and is also responsible for the production of the body’s own natural Tyrosine. Supplementing with Acetyl L-Tyrosine has been shown to treat against these symptoms. It is recommended to consume 3-6grams of Acetyl L-Tyrosine per every 100grams of protein.

Improves Mood and Fights Depression

Tyrosine has the ability to convert in to the chemical, Dopamine within the brain. Dopamine controls the brain’s pleasure centers and is often released when you either do something rewarding or take recreational drugs. Tyrosine converts in to L-Dopa which is then converted to Dopamine and this helps to fight depression by improving mood and happiness.

Improves Brain Function

Some studies have shown that supplementing with Acetyl L-Tyrosine improves memory, and brain function as well as helping its user to stay alert during times of sleeplessness.

Side Effects

Although Acetyl L-Tyrosine is safe in normal dosages, high dosages have reported some minor side effects. Up to 500mg is tolerated well by most individuals but anything more can increase the likelihood of side effects such as: insomnia, anxiety, increased heart rate and restlessness. Lower dosage if you experience any of these side effects and consult your doctor if they remain after stopping.
