In recent years, soft drink consumption has continually fallen in small increments. With the popularity of juices and flavored waters being marketed as new, healthy options many consumers have decreased, or completely staved off, their soda drinking habits. However, with the amount of caffeine found in sodas and the frequency soda consumers drink it, it’s no surprise that soda addiction has become so widespread. Even though giving up the beverage may seem like a daunting task, there are many reasons why you should quit.

Soft Drinks Contribute to Obesity

With a regular 12-oz. can of sugared soda delivering 150 calories and a 20-oz. bottle containing 250 calories, drinking multiple cans a day can quickly add up to a caloric overload. With no real nutritional value, the calories are being wasted and could be substituted for nutrient dense options.

Diet soda drinkers are also at risk. Though they are not consuming the sugar contained in non-diet soda, aspartame has been shown to increase blood sugar and cholesterol as well as increase the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Soft Drinks Contribute to Diabetes Risk

Packing 10 teaspoons of sugar into in to a 12-oz. can of soda gives it the sweet taste many consumers have grown to love. The problem with consuming that much sugar in a short amount of time is that it can cause irregular insulin reactions and dramatically increase blood sugar. When the body is exposed to this behavior long enough it can be come insulin resistant and cause diabetes.

Soft Drinks Increase Cell Ageing

According to a study from the American Journal of Public Health, drinking soft drinks can age your body at the same rate as smoking cigarettes. Drinking one 20-oz. bottle of soda per day can age the consumer 4.6 yearsover their lifetime. This is a reaction to telomere damage, caps on the ends of chromosomes, leading to decreased cell growth.

As consumers make the conscious shift to consume healthier beverage options, their risks for health problems associated with drinking soda will also decrease. Though the sugar contained in soda may seem like a good choice in the present, the problems it can bring just aren’t worth the risk.
